Brady Earnhart came to me with a clear concept and a set of beautiful photographs, so there was little for me to do in this design but to help him realize his own intentions. I suggested some color and placement choices for the type, and selected the photos best suited to fill out the interior matter and complement the cover concept. I convinced him to let me keep the glimpse of the toes of his shoes on the back cover because I liked the way they put the photos in some human context, and also how they echoed the near-absence of the leaves, and how the black leather added the perfect bottom note to the color scheme for the entire package. But ultimately this design is as much or more Brady’s as it is mine. Sometimes my role as a designer is just to grease the skids for my client’s vision and then get out of the way.
