Ian Lawler wanted a cover that illustrated the oxymoron of his title, Future Nostalgia. That made me think immediately of the our collective nostalgia for our culture’s past visions of the future, where we would be the pioneers of the galaxy, and everything would have a wholesome radioactive glow. Ian just has that kind of face too.
We took some photos of him posing with a beach ball as a stand in for a helmet, and then I used one for the model of an illustration. The landscape was inspired by old SF magazine covers and the antique radio Art Deco stylings of the Union Terminal train station in Cinncinnati.
